Frequently Asked Questions

The FAQs should help to answer any queries you have surrounding GeniePoint and charging your vehicle.

General

As GeniePoint is a ‘Pay as You Go’ network, a pre-authorisation amount is reserved on your payment card when you start a charge session. It is held temporarily and is released by your bank once the total fee for the charging session is processed.

For registered drivers, the pre-authorisation is £25 and for guest users / contactless payments, the pre-authorisation is £35.

  • If your charging session totals less than £25 as a registered driver, or £35 for guest users / contactless payments, a single payment will be applied to your payment card.
  • If your charge costs more than £25 as a registered driver, or £35 for guest users / contactless payments, then two payments will be applied to your payment card, one for £25 and another for the remaining amount.

To initiate a charging session on the GeniePoint network, we will request to hold £25 (for registered customers) or £35 (for guest users/contactless payments) from your payment card. If your charge does not take place within seven days, the £25/£35 will be returned to your bank account.

Please be aware that the pre-authorisation amount will be applied every time you attempt to start a charge session and multiple attempts will result in multiple pre-authorisations. If you ever require any help with starting a charging session please contact our Customer Service team who will be happy to assist you.

Please note, the release of the pre-authorisation amount is outside of our control and the time taken to do this is up to your own banking services provider. The refunding process should normally be processed within 24 hours.

You will receive a receipt for the charging session itself, plus separate VAT receipts for each of the payments applied to your payment card.

An overstay fee may be implemented when your vehicle is connected for over a certain period of time, and then for each subsequent period. Please see the information on the map for more details.

Most of our fast charge points are not subject to an overstay fee, however, please check the charge point information on our map and on individual charge points for specific details.

The overstay fee exists merely to ensure that the charge points are available for the next customer to use once you have finished charging.

Our charge points are often located on ‘host’ sites (such as council owned car parks). It is the host that decides whether parking fees apply whilst charging. Most site owners will grant you free parking, but it is very important that you read the on-site signs to make sure you understand their policy.

We will not accept any responsibility if you are issued with a penalty charge notice for non-payment of parking charges.

Overstay Fees may be implemented if you are charging for over a certain period of time.

Most of our fast charge points are not subject to an overstay fee. However, please check the charge point information on our map and on individual charge points for specific details.

If we make any changes to the provision of our services, our pricing or terms and conditions we will still communicate these messages via email.  Service messages are factual and are permitted within the scope of the agreement that you hold with us.
